BMW Motorrad has entered into a partnership with Italian riding-apparel specialist Dainese to produce a new range of innovative safety gear featuring the latter’s D-Air Protect System of inflatable protectors. This prototype one-piece suit, BMW’s DoubleR RaceAir, is the first item to stem from that collaboration.
While the leathers are fully integrated with Dainese’s inflatable protectors, the two companies are currently examining a range of uses for the D-Air Protect System, including a means of retro-fitting the system to other apparel items. The D-Air system essentially sees the protectors inflate in the event of an accident, providing extra impact absorption without adding excess bulk in normal riding.
Developed solely for use on the track, the DoubleR RaceAir leathers are currently undergoing testing and will be officially unveiled at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, Italy, in November 2013.
BMW Motorrad has announced it is also currently looking at Dainese’s D-Air Street System, a protective inflatable upper-body vest worn by the rider but linked to an on-bike unit that senses when the bike is about to crash. Scheduled for launch in 2015, BMW Motorrad is hoping to fit the system to its motorcycle range, adding an additional level of safety to its products as a part of its ‘Safety 360’ principle, the latter focusing on safety technology in vehicles, safety derived from rider equipment, and safety through rider training.
