BMW Motorrad Australia has introduced a new on-bike communications system, with the ConnectedRide Com U1 said to bring riders “a seamless, multi-purpose communications solution”.
The system, which is said to have a universal design that allows it to fit to a range of helmets, including BMW’s own StreetX, GS Pure and Sao Paolo models, affords communication between riders and pillions, and between groups of up to 24 people equipped with the device.
It also allows users to make phone calls, follow voice commands from their navigation system, or listen to one of up to 10 FM radio stations that can be saved to the system. Switching stations can be achieved at the touch of a button, or via the free ‘Com U1’ app.
The ConnectedRide Com U1 system comes with a clamp to allow the device to be fitted to your helmet (check with your dealer for compatibility), and high-definition speakers that are fitted inside the helmet.

Voice commands are available in eight languages, and connecting your phone allows you to use your phone’s digital assistant, if available.
There’s a flashing LED and a voice announcement to indicate low battery power, and BMW says the unit has a battery life of up to 13 hours with Bluetooth, or up to eight hours using Mesh connectivity. The unit can charge in one hour, while a 20-minute charge can afford six hours of Bluetooth use or 3.5 hours of Mesh use.
The system has a range of up to 2km using Bluetooth in open terrain or up to 8km using Mesh, if at least six riders are connected and riding no more than 1.6km from each other. A flip-up antenna is provided to enhance range when using Mesh.
Up to six users can speak simultaneously during active group communications, and while Bluetooth can be used to allow communication between two participants, Mesh can allow communication within a closed group of up to 24 participants.
Alternatively, a multi-channel Open Mesh mode provides nine communication channels and can support a nearly unlimited number of users on the same channel, provided they’re in range. And users can switch between private Group Mesh and Open Mesh modes at the press of a button.
The BMW Motorrad ConnectedRide Com U1 retails for $499.95 and is available from BMW Motorrad dealers in July.
