New plans to develop a motorsport circuit at the Mount Panorama precinct in Bathurst have emerged, according to a report in the Western Advocate.
According to the newspaper, the controlling body for motorcycle sport in NSW, Motorcycle NSW, has sumbitted a proposal to Bathurst Regional Council to build a stand alone 3.5km track on land near Conrod Straight, including the former drive-in cinema site.
A confidential meeting has already been held to discuss the issue, attended by representatives from local council, Motorcycling NSW, and the second circuit action group.
“I have always said council needs to look at all options when it comes to developing Mount Panorama,” Councillor Ian North was quoted as saying in the Western Advocate. He continued: “There are only two open tracks in NSW, at Wakefield Park and Eastern Creek, and they are booked solid.
“Put simply, this state needs more facilities for motorsport and Motorcycling NSW is looking at Bathurst to fill this void. I must stress, though, that these are only early days yet.”
Just last year, a push for a second circuit at Mt Panorama was scuppered after a feasibility study into the venture came in at a price tag of $100 million.
Motorcycle racing was once an indelible part of the Mt Panorama landscape, hosting popular races such as the Arai 500 endurance race and various Australian TT events.
