Sydney's motorsport community has received a massive boost in the form of a far-reaching refurbishment of Eastern Creek Raceway, in the city's western suburbs.
The $12m facelift has resulted in an altered track layout, uprgraded pit facilities and a huge boost to the track's capacity -- now said to be nearly double its previous capacity. The circuit has a new name to accompany the fresh image, too, and is now known as Sydney Motorsport Park.
Funded by the NSW state government in partnership with the track's manager, the Australian Racing Drivers' Club (ARDC), the facility now boasts an 830m extension to its existing grand prix circuit, resulting in a total length of 4.5km.
The layout effectively delivers a total of four track configurations, with North GP and South GP layouts that can host two separate events, if required. Work is continuing on a control tower and pit facility for the South GP circuit, the new facilities to be located near Turns Four and Five.
According to the CEO of the ARDC, Glenn Matthews, with the extent of the update a new name was entirely warranted. "What we have in Sydney Motorsport Park is unique in Sydney, and indeed NSW," he said. "It is the only permanent race track in the Sydney basin, and as a result the decision was taken that its name should reflect this," he added.
"I must thank the NSW state government for embracing our vision, its passion for the venue and for its decision to continue its contribution to the future of motorsport in NSW," he added.
The complex's existing pit lane is also being refurbished, with work due to be completed shortly.
"We have experienced a spike in demand over the past two years, and all of these changes and upgrades have been made in order for us to be able to properly service Sydney's motorsport public," Mr Matthews said.
"Apart from year-long racing, Sydney Motorsport Park offers a dynamic range of motorsport experiences for the enthusiast, with track days, motorcycle ride days, V8 racing experiences, classic and supercar experiences and much more," he added.
