The new BMW is a sharply focussed sports performance machine blessed with dynamic riding characteristics.
A single glance at the athletic stance is all it takes to confirm the superior performance and sporting power of the new R 1200 S. The front fairing bears an interpretation of the famous BMW kidney grille and asymmetric dual headlights continue the sporting theme. A large sports silencer for the exhaust and innovative LED tail lights complete the power picture.
BMW Motorrad designers used the successful R 1100 S as their starting point for the R 1200 S, and were able to carve out a shape that looks dynamic standing still or riding hard.
The slender and athletic silhouette reflects the scrupulous weight saving innovation and technology within. The overall weight of the new BMW R 1200 S is reduced by a full 13 kg compared with the R 1100 S with a dry weight of just 195 kg in road trim.
Fully fuelled and ready to ride, the R 1200 S tips the scales at an equally impressive 213 kg.
Powering this thoroughbred athlete is a further development of the 1,170 cc twin cylinder engine first revealed on the 2004 International Bike of the Year, the BMW R 1200 GS.
Carefully modified for road sport use, the Boxer now delivers a magnificent 90 kW (122 hp) of power at 8,250 rpm. Peak torque is 112 Nm at 6,800 rpm.
The R 1200 S was not designed to be a super sports machine (this role is amply served by the new BMW K 1200 S). Rather, one of the most important objectives in developing the new R 1200 S was to achieve a perfect synthesis of sportiness and everyday riding comfort. This dictated a relaxed seating position for effortless riding enjoyment even on long distances.
As with all BMW Motorrad products sold in Australia, the new R 1200 S comes complete with a fully controlled catalytic converter, single-wire electronics system for the on-board network, complete with an electronic immobiliser, a smooth and easy-shifting six-speed gearbox, maintenance-free shaft drive with a single swinging arm, as well as Telelever front wheel suspension.
The suspension has been set up to deliver extremely precise and smooth handling at all times, and is backed by high-performance brakes with BMW Motorrad ABS anti-lock brakes optional. The brakes combine low weight and fast response and are perfect for the sports rider. The BMW Motorrad ABS system fitted to the R 1200 S comes without the integral function and is switchable, allowing the rider to deactivate ABS for the race track.
Performance riders who want to further enhance the looks and functionality of their machines, can specify an extra-wide rear wheel and high-performance Öhlins sports suspension with variable length spring struts.
