New BMW M 1000 RR for 2021

A new high-spec superbike will join the BMW range, with the Munich firm unveiling the all-new 2021 BMW M 1000 RR. The new machine will be produced in limited numbers with a price tag north of $50,000AUD.

Based on the popular BMW S 1000 RR, the new model is the first motorcycle to use the iconic M designation, and features an array of high-performance upgrades.

With the M sub-brand acting as BMW’s high-performance and motorsport arm, the BMW M 1000 RR is built with a strong track focus. The bike is designed to meet various racing homologation requirements around the world, including ASBK in Australia.

The M 1000 RR’s water-cooled four-cylinder engine is based heavily on the S 1000 RR powerplant, but it has been given a boost in horsepower, with the M registering 212hp at 14,500rpm. The M RR engine also has extensive technical optimisations and, like the S 1000 RR, also features BMW’s ShiftCam technology.

Elsewhere, the M RR adds M winglets and a high windscreen for improved aerodynamics, as well as a modified chassis design especially for track use. A full suite of M performance products have been included on the M RR as standard, including M braking components and M carbon wheels.

Additionally, the M RR features the full range of BMW electronics including multiple riding modes, Dynamic Traction control (including wheelie function), Shift Assist Pro, launch control, hill start control and two adjustable characteristic throttle curves for optimum response.

Available as an option, the M performance package improves things even further and includes the M GPS laptrigger, M milled parts package, M carbon package, a lighter swingarm, DLC-coated M endurance chain, and passenger package including tail-hump cover.

BMW’s M strategy has been used extensively in the four-wheel world, and while some BMW Motorrad motorcycles have featured M packages and optional equipment, the M 1000 RR is the first specific M model.

The introduction of the M sub-brand to BMW’s motorcycle division was first announced in March, 2019, with Motorrad CEO Markus Schramm hinting at standalone, flagship M models. “You can be sure we will have M models which will be much more sports-orientated than our regular products,” Schramm said at the time.

The new BMW M 1000 RR expected to arrive on Australian shores in very limited numbers in early 2021. Pricing is tipped to start at a tad over $50,000. The 2019 BMW S 1000 RR M Sport checks in at $30,990AUD.
