Insurer confirms new toys more riskyAmerican motorcycle insurer Progressive has confirmed what many of us knew already, that getting on an unfamiliar motorcycle greatly increases the risks of it all going pear-shaped.
The company claims your chance of going astray goes up by 70 per cent when on a new toy.
"Most people already know that riding can be especially dangerous for new bikers," said Rick Stern, a Progressive motorcycle product manager who is also a rider. "But our data shows that the less familiar you are with your bike, the more likely you are to be involved in a collision, regardless of your experience."
The data was taken from a survey of 2 million policies over a five-year period.
Progressive also claims that cruiser riders who switch to sport bikes double their risk, while sports riders switching to cruisers reduce their risk by a third.
