American motorcycle insurer Progressive has confirmed what many of us knew already, that getting on an unfamiliar motorcycle greatly increases the risks of it all going pear-shaped.
The company claims your chance of going astray goes up by 70 per cent when on a new toy.
"Most people already know that riding can be especially dangerous for new bikers," said Rick Stern, a Progressive motorcycle product manager who is also a rider. "But our data shows that the less familiar you are with your bike, the more likely you are to be involved in a collision, regardless of your experience."
The data was taken from a survey of 2 million policies over a five-year period.
Progressive also claims that cruiser riders who switch to sport bikes double their risk, while sports riders switching to cruisers reduce their risk by a third.
