New 2022 Kawasaki Z650RS retro sport model revealed

The retro-style LAMS-approved Kawasaki Z650RS is headed for Australian shores soon

The all-new 2022 Kawasaki Z650RS has finally been confirmed, with the new twin-cylinder model offering retro style and a learner-friendly riding experience.

Rumours of the 2022 Kawasaki Z650RS have been circulating for weeks after the Japanese firm released a series of teasers dubbed ‘Retrovolution’. The new model joins Kawasaki’s Retro Sport lineup, which already includes the inline four-cylinder Kawasaki Z900RS.

Retro power

Powered by a 649cc parallel-twin engine that puts out 50hp at 8000rpm and 59Nm at 6500rpm, the new Z650R is LAMS-approved and designed with ease-of-use in mind. It features a slim, lightweight chassis, a low 800mm seat height and a relaxed riding position; all of which will benefit learner riders. The bike weighs in at just 186kg fully-fuelled.

An unrestricted full-power version has been announced for overseas markets, however Kawasaki Australia has confirmed only the LAMS model will arrive on our shores. This follows the lead of another Kawasaki 650 twin model, the Z650L, which is also only available in LAMS trim. Kawasaki does, however, bring in a full-power Ninja 650, as well as a Ninja 650L.

The new Z650RS also features a retro-style round LED headlight, a dual-dial instrument panel with multi-function LCD screen, a 13L fuel tank, and plenty of retro-style aesthetic details. Notably, the cast-alloy wheels are designed to look like traditional wire-spoked wheels.

Other key features include the assist and slipper clutch, the lightweight trellis frame, the 41mm telescopic fork and back-link rear suspension, dual 300m front and single 220mm rear brake discs, and standard ABS.

The 2022 Kawasaki Z650RS will arrive with two colour options, which Kawasaki interestingly calls ‘Special Editions’. The colours are Candy Emerald Green and Metallic Moondust Grey. There are also a number of accessories available.

Local pricing is still to be confirmed, however UK pricing is set to start at £7549GBP, which converts to roughly $14,000AUD. The similarly-styled, but more-powerful Z900RS checks in at $18,333AUD ride away. The new Z650RS is set to hit Australian dealerships in ‘late 2021’.
