Japan's Shinya Nakano will join Italian Max Biaggi at Aprilia in the marque's return to the Superbike World Championship in 2009.
The 31-year-old Nakano, a six-time 250 GP winner, signed a one-year contract with Aprilia after visiting its racing department in Noale, with an option to extend the deal into 2010.
Nakano and Biaggi will ride the all-new 1000cc RSV4 V-four, which marks the Italian company's return to world Superbike after a six-year self-imposed exile. Aprilia is owned by massive scooter company, Piaggio.
"I am happy indeed, for me it is a joy to belong to the Aprilia family," said Nakano. "Superbike is a new challenge, and I want to risk all of my experience to help the new Aprilia RSV4 project.
"It will be a honour to be able to race beside Max Biaggi, as he is a hero of mine and he was an inspiration to me in the first phases of my career, I am sure that together we will succeed in developing the best motorbike and to already get good results in the season 2009."
Nakano is a 10-year grand prix veteran - two in 250cc and eight in 500cc/MotoGP. His best world championship result was second in 2000 after a memorable final round at Phillip Island, when he was locked in combat with teammate - and eventual world champion - Olivier Jacque for the whole race.
It still remains one of the classic Phillip Island races. Nakano was also the 1998 All-Japan 250 GP champion.
