MX2 champion to take on world

Australia's recently crowned MX2 motocross champion Luke Styke has been signed by a Dutch-based Yamaha team to contest the equivalent world title in 2014

There must be something about finishing second in the Australian Motocross Championship. Only recently, it was announced that 2013 MX1 runner-up Todd Waters was heading across to the Motocross World Championship in 2014, and now Luke Styke – second in the MX2 class – has announced he is following suit.

Styke, 21, will compete alongside incumbent 19-year-old Petar Petrov in the Dutch-based Kemea Reytec van de Laar Yamaha team.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to have a good deal and team for 2014,” said Styke. “I can’t wait to come over and start testing the new Yamaha YZ250F and meet the team.

“Next year is going to be an awesome experience moving to Europe. I really look forward to meet new people and to race in such a high level of racing every weekend. My goal for next year is to finish within the top five.”

After missing the Aussie MX2 title by only 2pts in 2012, Styke won nine of the 10 rounds in 2013 as he utterly dominated the championship
