MV Agusta Street Motard

The Italian marque is milking its new 675cc engine for all its worth, with work already underway on a new street motard motorcycle

According to the MV Agusta F3's designer, Adrian Morton, the Italian motorcycle maker is currently developing a third model to make use of its new generation inline three-cylinder engine.

UK magazine MotorcycleNews broke the news after chatting to Morton, who said the new model will be as rapid as the MV Agusta F3 "...just within a more usable package."

The news is significant as it shows that MV Agusta's owners, the Castiglioni family, are pumping fresh funds into the company's R&D budget, which is good news for Italian motorcycle fans.

The MV Agusta Street Motard is likely to be the third model to use the 675cc engine after the F3 and B3 Brutale.

"Since concluding the F3, I have been assigned to the Street Motard project," revealed Morton. "It's an entirely new category of motorcycle for us so I have had more freedom than previous 'evolutionary' projects like the new F4. I can't wait for it to come to fruition."

Powered by a 675cc triple, the new MV Agusta Street Motard sounds like a very cool idea, and can be expected to grow its market share in Europe initially.

MV Agusta's upcoming Street Motard will rival the Ducati Hypermotard 796 (pictured) and if the company decides to drop its 1000cc four-cylinder engine into the frame, it could even have a Hypermotard 1100 competitor.

"I think the [Ducati] Hypermotard is a great road bike," opined MV Agusta designer, Adrian Morton. "It's compact and has a confident, commanding riding position that is great for crazy traffic conditions. I think it’s one of the most significant bikes to reflect the transition from uncompromising sports bikes to more practical, 'unthreatening' two wheeled transport.

"Any bike to bear the MV Agusta badge on the fuel tank ... has to be exceptional, not just 'okay'. If the values that we see as essential for MV Agusta are appreciated by passionate motorcyclists, then hopefully our bike will find its way to centre-stage. It will be a thoroughbred, and in many respects be just as focused and exceptional as the F3, just within a more usable package."

Expect MV Agusta to show a concept version of the new Street Motard in November at EICMA in Milan, and depending on how quickly it can turn around the design, we could see the bike as early as 2013.
