MV Agusta has unveiled a ‘Smart Clutch System’, which will debut in the company’s premium sports tourer – the Turismo Veloce Lusso.
The SCS was developed alongside American clutch specialist Rekluse over a two-year period, offering the two choices: to use the clutch in the traditional way by operating the lever on the handlebars (yes, it's still there!), or hand over complete control of the clutch to the system.
As mentioned, the clutch lever can be used at any time, without limitation. The automatic clutch system actually operates in parallel and so there is no need for any prior selection when switching from manual to automatic operation.
The SCS differs from a dual clutch system, which Honda uses on the Africa Twin and Goldwing families and one which MV Agusta says is “complex, very heavy and excessively bulky” and “completely at odds with the design choices underpinning our 800cc three-cylinder engine”.
SCS has a specific set of clutch plates, with greater friction surface area and special springs. Weight is on par with a traditional clutch system – and doesn’t the transparent clutch cover look trick!
MV Agusta claims 0-100km/h in 3.15 seconds, as well as improved traction and better lever feel.
No word yet on when production of the Lusso SCS model will commence, or local availability.
