MV Agusta F4 RR

The latest Italian exotic sports bike has broken cover, propelled by an almost completely new 200hp four-cylinder engine

Having been teased with the arrival of the 2012 MV Agusta F4 RR last week, the Italian motorcycle maker has now come clean with full details on the new model, a 200hp (148kW) beast of a bike with a 13,700rpm rev limit thanks to forged aerospace alloy pistons and a new cylinder head.

The local importer of MV Agusta told the Bikesales Network that the F4 RR will indeed be coming to Australia in August or September 2011, with indicative pricing at around $35,000.

What can you expect for your money? Power and style, by the looks.

The new MV Agusta F4 RR features a "completely new" 998cc liquid-cooled inline four-cylinder engine (except for the engine case castings) and was developed with one thing in mind: "maximum performance" says the Italian company.

Tipping the scales at 192kg dry (423 lbs), the new model is also lighter than its predecessor and with peak power and torque outputs of 200hp at 13,400rpm and 114Nm at 9200rpm, the inline-four cylinder sports bike is shaping up to one of the quickest MV Agusta motorcycles ever made.

As well as a host of new mechanical changes to the short-stroke engine, such as an increased bore diameter, the iconic 4-2-1-4 exhaust system has been restyled, swapping out the smooth circular end pipes for rectangular items, and two new colour options are available - matte pearl white and pastel red-on-white.

A list of the major new features is as follows:

• New short-stroke radial valve engine 200hp at 13,400rpm
• New increased bore diameter
• New primary drive
• New cylinder head
• New large-diameter titanium intake and exhaust valves
• New lightweight forged pistons in "aerospace RR alloy"
• New exhaust 4-2-1-4
• Close ratio gearbox
• Variable length intake runners
• Öhlins multi-adjustable upside down 43mm fork
• Öhlins TTX 36 rear shock
• Öhlins steering damper
• Forged aluminium wheels

The beefed up engine transfers its motive force to the rear wheel via a six-speed close ratio cassette type gearbox, and MV Agusta reckons that the bike will hit 134 km/h in first gear, 172km/h in second gear, and to cut a long story short, more than 295km/h in sixth gear.

The thermoplastic fairing has been designed to ensure low drag, high speed characteristics, while Brembo anchors take care of deceleration. Up front are twin 320mm floating rotors each clamped by four-pot Brembo calipers, while at the rear is a single 210mm rotor, also covered by a four-piston caliper.

Rolling stock is comprised of forged aluminium 17-inch wheels shod with 120/70 ZR 17 front and
190/55 ZR 17 rear rubber.

Measuring 2100mm long and 750mm wide with a 1430mm wheelbase, the new 2012 MV Agusta F4 RR has a relatively high seat height of 830mm and ground clearance of 115mm. It also has a 192kg dry kerb weight and a 17 litre fuel tank.

Along with a trio of adjustable Öhlins suspension systems - forks, rear shock and steering damper - the MV Agusta F4 RR is also set up to allow fine-tuning in other areas. For instance the aluminium alloy rear swing arm has an adjustable swingarm pivot height, and the footrests are also adjustable for height, so that riders of different sizes will be able to find a comfortable riding position.
