There have been a number of false dawns over the years, but now MV Agusta’s long-awaited official return to motorcycle racing could be on the cards.
According to a report in the current issue of Australian Motorcycle News, MV Agusta, via the Belgian-based Team Alstare, is planning a limited world Supersport campaign in 2012 using the company’s new F3 675cc triple, which would then parlay into a full championship tilt in 2013. But the real biggie is that MV would also launch a full world Superbike campaign in 2013, using the new short-stroke F4RR Corsacorta to uphold its fortunes. When asked in AMCN why MV Agusta was planning a return to the race track, vice-president Massimo Bordi said: “Because we have to do it. A year ago, I wasn’t convinced it was necessary, but now I realise there is no choice – MV must be there fulfilling sporting heritage and demonstrating the value of our products.
“More than anything else, our customers demand it… and there’s another side to the storey.
“I am the one who developed the idea of the Superbike World Championship – the idea came form me! So I of all people understand the value of taking part in this form of racing.”
Initial plans call for a four-rider Team Alstare outfit in 2013 – two riders apiece in each production-based championship.
In 2012, Italian Luca Scassa is tipped to be the world Supersport rider during the handful of – we presume – European-based events.
MV Agusta was a motorcycle racing icon during the golden age of racing in the 1960s and 1970s, and signed off with 75 world championship titles in 1976.
The company returned to Italian ownership in 2011 after previous owner Harley-Davidson chose to divest its 100 per cent interest.
