MT-07 based Yamaha Tenere?

The MT-07 has already been a tremendous success down under, and an adventure offshoot could take on a similar chart-busting path

Middleweight adventure bikes are seemingly back in vogue, with the likes of BMW Motorrad and Triumph set to feel the heat from not only KTM in the foreseeable future, but it now appears that Yamaha is renewing its challenge with an MT-07 based machine -- one that could replace the single-cylinder XTZ660 Tenere.

Images are currently circulating on the web of a test mule going through its paces, complete with wire wheels, upside-down forks, an aluminium bashplate, revised swingarm, taller handlebars and an almost vertical windscreen.

There are two battle lines for the parallel twin MT-07 available in Australia: the 655cc LAMS version, which is the third biggest selling roadbike in the country, and the 689cc HO (High Output) model. If Yamaha does commit to the new Tenere, it's highly likely the boffins at Yamaha Australia will be pushing for yet another twin assault.

The HO version of the MT-07 produces 74.8hp and 68Nm, and the LAMS version a respectable 52hp and 57.5Nm.

Has Yamaha left its run too late for an unveiling at the major motorcycle shows in late 2016? We hope not…
