Maggs stated that further use of WRBs was recently banned throughout the Netherlands by the Dutch parliament after tests and media questioning about their true safety.
Research from around the world (including Australia) has shown that motorcyclists hitting these barriers have up to a 10 times increased chances of death or serious injury.
MRAA called upon Premier Steve Bracks to make good on his original pre election promise to halt installation of Wire Rope Barriers until further testing has been completed.
Maggs said " The use of these type of barriers go against all common sense, they cost more to maintain than other types of barrier, and they are extremely dangerous to vulnerable road users"
"VicRoads saying they are for our safety is just not plausible, for example on Thompsons Road in the City of Casey. Vic Roads believes that placing steel poles every 3 metres apart on the very edge of the road is safer than steel poles every 30 metres apart and 5 metres in from the road verge".
"In other cases VicRoads has placed them so close to the road edge, that if your car breaks down or you need to stop in a hurry you have to park halfway into the traffic lane. They force you to exit the vehicle into the moving traffic. If it wasn't so serious it would be a joke."
The MRAA urges all riders to lobby their local politicians and have these insidious barriers removed form our roads, before even more fatal accidents are caused.
