A new television advert highlighting the carelessness of car drivers in most motorcycle fatalities has hit the airwaves, with the catch-cry 'Stop SMIDSY' - "Sorry Mate I didn't See You".
Created with backing from Motorcycling Australia and Maurice Blackburn Lawyers through Lawyers4riders, the new TV advert can be seen below, and urges car drivers to "Take a longer look" before turning or merging.
The 30-second TV ad features Bron Sorensen, a motorcycle racer, SMIDSY ambassador, commuter, and mother, imploring car drivers to look carefully when turning, which is followed by the sound of a heart-rate monitor flat lining.
In clear rebuttal to recent TAC adverts that blame motorcyclists for making risky decisions, the new TV commercial brings new statistics to light, highlighting that in "84% of rider fatalities, where drivers turned into, or across, the path of the motorcycle -- the driver was at fault. Not the motorcyclist."
John Voyage, Principal at Maurice Blackburn, said that motorcyclists are not the only road users who need to take care.
"When it comes to road safety it's not just down to motorcyclists, it's up to everyone. Contrary to what is often claimed, motorcyclists are not to blame for most serious collisions and we have the figures to back that up," stated Mr Voyage.
