With motorcycles accounting for one in six vehicle thefts in Australia, there’s some added security measures to suit every budget. Where possible, go for a layered approach.  

Deterrents don’t need to be expensive and the Lok-Up Disc Lock is a great example. This lightweight lock features a simple one-handed locking mechanism, a 5.5mm pin which will fit nearly every brake rotor and comes with two keys. Compact, inexpensive and convenient.

This durable disc lock features a 100dB alarm siren, powered by a lithium CR2 long-life battery. It is equipped with motion and shock sensors and has a simple push-to-lock mechanism to attach it to the rotor. Its 7mm diameter locking pin is compatible with most brake discs, the keyway cover is water-resistant, while its compact dimensions means it can be stowed under the seat or in your jacket pocket. 

A NZ-designed hinge-type lock that mounts directly onto the throttle and front-brake lever. This 1.8m twisted-steel cable is covered with a cut-resistant hardened steel sheath and features a X2P Double Bolt locking mechanism whose Z-Cylinder tumbler offers protection against picking and bump attacks. The lock heads are forged to the cable ends for added durability, the vinyl coating safeguards paint work and a double rubber-coated lock head provides a better grip and protection against impacts. This heavy-duty security chain features 14mm six-sided links made from 3T manganese steel for superior strength. It includes a maximum-security New York Disc Lock with a 15mm steel shackle. The chain comes with three stainless-steel keys, including an updated key design and one with a replaceable LED so you can see to unlock your bike in the dark. Resistant to picking and drilling, the lock uses a hardened double deadbolt design, while the patented hardened oval crossbar offers greater strength compared to standard round tubes. The 1.5-metre chain is fabric covered and weighs 6.92kg.

This ground anchor from Japanese brand Komine offers an affordable deterrent against theft. Compatible with various chains and locks, the anchor is designed to be mounted on concrete surfaces, making it ideal for garages, parking spaces or other permanent locations.

The Kryptonite Stronghold Anchor provides a permanent anchoring point to deter theft. The shackle is constructed from 16mm hardened carbon alloy steel, the Stronghold Anchor resists cutting, prying and attacks, ensuring maximum durability and security. The 190mm diameter domed design prevents tripping hazards, while the weather-resistant cover protects it from rust and wear, ensuring longevity. It’s at the pricey end of the ground anchor spectrum, but worth the investment. The necessary  hardware for fitment is included in the box, as is the right-sized masonry bits for drilling both the pilot and final holes. 

This affordable alarm system operates on a 12-volt DC power supply and has a straightforward installation process that doesn’t require modifications to your bike’s wiring, making it pretty accessible for DIYers. The system is equipped with a compact control unit and a sensitive motion sensor that detects movement or tampering. Upon detection, it emits a 125dB alarm to deter would-be thieves and alert others.
