Motorcycle sales top 113,000 in 2013
The road segment was the most popular, with 39 percent of total sales, ahead of off-road, ATVs and scooters. In total, the market contracted 2.1 per cent in 2013Australians bought 113,289 new motorcycles, ATVs and scooters in 2013, which equates to a 2.2 fall compared to 2012.
Road motorcycles were the most popular choice, with almost 39 per cent of total purchases, ahead of off-road (34 per cent), ATV (19 per cent) and scooter (eight per cent).
Honda retained its status as the biggest selling marque in Australia, with 22.4 per cent of total market share, ahead of Yamaha (17.7), Kawasaki (10.3), Suzuki (9.5), Harley-Davidson (7.3), KTM (6.3), Polaris (3.9), Triumph (2.7) and CFMoto (2.2).
Kawasaki is now well clear in third place, as Suzuki continues to feel the heat as the most under siege Japanese manufacturer, its road and ATV products taking the biggest percentage hits in 2013.
Of the top 10, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Polaris and Triumph all sold fewer units than in 2012, while Kawasaki, Harley-Davidson, KTM and CFMoto all made gains.
Of the other marques, BMW, BRP, Husqvarna, Piaggio and Victory also sold more units in 2013, while Aprilia, Ducati, Hyosung, Kymco and Moto Guzzi contracted.
Honda sold the most ATVs and road bikes, Yamaha led the way in off-road, and Piaggio was the scooter pacesetter.
Indian was an impressive newcomer, with 102 units sold in less than six months.
Individually, Kawasaki’s Ninja 300 still remains the hottest ticket in town, with 3560 sold in 2013, streets ahead of the Honda CRF250F (2731), Yamaha TT-R50 (1808), Honda CBR500R (1748), Yamaha WR450F (1684), Honda CBR250R (1580), Honda CRF110F (1492), Honda CT110X (1489), Yamaha PW50 (1342) and Honda CB125E (1218).
In the battle for supersport supremacy, the CBR500R was the clear winner, ahead of the first 'thoroughbred' in the category -- the CBR1000RR with 468 sales. Meanwhile, the majority of the CBR1000RR's competitors couldn't get past 300 units, including the Ducati 1199 Panigale (291), Suzuki GSX-R1000 (277), Yamaha YZF-R1 (272), BMW S 1000 RR (252) and 2013 world superbike-winning Kawasaki ZX-10R (231).
Honda's all-new 500 platform, which also includes the CB500X and CB500F, performed exceptionally across the board, raking in 2520 sales for Honda.
