Motorcycle sales in Australian are up 26.4 per cent from 2019, with the FCAI releasing sales figures for the first nine months of 2020.
A total of 79,623 bikes were sold between January 1 and September 30, compared to 62,971 during the same period in 2019. According to the FCAI, the sales boom is in direct contrast to the majority of Australian industry sectors – many of which reported negative growth during the pandemic.
Throughout all of 2019, a total of 89,199 new motorcycles were sold in Australia, so the industry is well on track to smash that figure in 2020.

The off-road segment has flourished during the pandemic, with sales up an incredible 39.9 per cent. Australians have bought 31,776 off-road motorcycles since January, compared to 22,718 during the first three quarters of 2019. Dirt bikes now make up 39.9 per cent of the total market.
Experts believe the popularity of the off-road segment is due to people chasing alternative hobbies in the midst of the pandemic and travel bans.
ATVs and UTVs also experienced a significant increase in sales, up 44.4 per cent from 2019, with a total of 18,930 sales. This is likely due to the incoming ATV safety regulations and the exit of major manufacturers from the Australian market.
While the road bike segment also saw an increase, it was much smaller, up 8.2 per cent. The scooter segment was down by 4.5 per cent.
