Motorcycle registrations surging Australia-wide

Only articulated trucks within cooee of the two-wheelers

January 16, 2009

Motorcycle registrations in Australia are growing at a far greater rate than any other vehicle, according to the latest Motor Vehicle Census (MVC) by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

As of March 31, 2008, total number of motor vehicles registered in Australia rose 3.5 percent (over the previous 12 months) to reach 15.3 million, with motorcycles up 10.8 percent in that same period -- and up by over 50 percent in the last five years.

That's due to a combination of factors, including cost (cheaper outlay and running costs compared to cars), increasing traffic congestion and environmental concerns.

The vehicle type with the next largest growth was articulated trucks with 6.3 percent growth, and an increase of 23.1 percent in the past five years.

The 15.3 million registrations equates to 719 vehicles for every 1000 Australian residents.

The MVC has been held every year since 1971, and the first one was held way back in 1921.
