The half-yearly motorcycle sales results were recently announced by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (here), and made for some very illuminating reading.
There is no doubt that some of the industry’s heavy hitters have been feeling the pinch in 2009, but there is another measure for analysing the state of affairs – market share.
Using that gauge, it reveals that Kawasaki (up from eight to nine percent) and Suzuki (13-15) have both increased total market share compared to the same period in 2008, while Honda (24-21) has decreased and Yamaha has held firm at 21 percent.
The other marques to rise have been Polaris and Husaberg, although they are coming from a very low base. All the other marques have maintained market share.
In the individual segments, BRP (Bombardier) and Polaris have both increased market share in ATV; Kawasaki and KTM are the only two to improve their lot in off-road; BMW, Hyosung, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha are the improvers in road; while Aprilia, Honda, SYM and Vespa are the standouts in scooter.
Although Honda has made a quantum leap in scooter, that segment has taken a big hit in 2009, so the gains made there have not been enough to offset the losses in ATV, off-road and scooter.
That explains why Honda’s total market share has dropped to 21 percent in a year, but it still holds equal top spot with Yamaha, followed by Suzuki (15), Kawasaki (nine), Harley-Davidson (six), KTM (five) and Triumph (three).
