Motorcycle mapping by Metzeler

Check out the world's best motorcycle ride routes

There are few things better than going for a cruise (or a fast blast) down your favourite roads, but one of them is finding new roads to conquer.

Metzeler Tyres has created a new website, Metzelermaps.com, designed specifically for motorcycle riders to post their favourite ride routes.

We came across the website via a UK-based website but after having a fiddle with the system (which was a bit slow, it should be said) it works for a worldwide audience. There was already one rider-posted route for New Zealand, and as more riders sign up to the free application we might even see a few Australian routes too.

The idea is simple, and uses Google maps to help paint a global picture, showing which roads and routes are recommended by other motorcyclists. It allows users to post photos and videos and write a synopsis of the route as well, or even critique the routes of others.

Better yet, the system allows users with smart phones or GPS sat-nav systems to upload the routes to easily follow them when out on the road. This has the potential to make rides in foreign countries an absolute breeze.

Finding various routes across the planet is also simplified via a search system that lets users specify what sorts of rides they want, whether geographical (coastal or alpine for instance) or durational (three hour rides or three day rides).

At present there aren't many members on the site -- about 500 at last count -- but as this membership builds the website could become the default portal for motorcyclists looking at interesting and new riding routes.

Riders will have to upload their trips or routes for the application to grow, but the potential of this new site is huge. If you get the chance, check out Metzelermaps.com. It could be the next big thing!

History
Metzeler was originally a German motorcycle tyre company, founded in 1863. During its long history it has made tyres for the automobile and aviation industries, but in 1979 made the decision to focus purely on motorcycle tyres. The company is now owned by Italian company Pirelli, who bought the company in 1986.
