The Motorcycle Council of NSW has been inadvertently drawn into the NSW motorcycle gang wars, with the organisation now likely to be forced to justify its relationship with high-ranking Hells Angels (HA) member, Derek Wainohu.
Last Sunday, 53-year-old Wainohu was ambushed at Sydney Airport with two others, and one man died in the confrontation - Anthony Zervas, 29.
Yesterday, Wainohu was suspended from his job at the Roads and Traffic Authority by the NSW premier, Nathan Rees. Wainohu had worked at the RTA since 1992, and is a leading expert on vehicle and industrial safety.
Today, Wainohu has been linked with the MCC of NSW in The Daily Telegraph (here). The story says that in 2004 Wainohu lobbied the then parliamentary roads secretary, Tony Stewart, on behalf of the MCC of NSW over motorcycle safety.
While the MCC is not implicated of any impropriety, BikePoint believes the organisation has hired a public relations firm to minimise the fallout from recent events, and to reaffirm that its mandate is solely about motorcycle safety.
