All motorcycle activity at Barbagallo Raceway in Perth has been halted immediately and indefinitely, with the decision made by the circuit operator just days after a sixth rider was killed at the circuit in the last 16 years.
According to a report on ABC news, a safety audit of Barbagallo Raceway this year was handed to the WA Department of Sport and Recreation on Friday, November 4 – a day before 21-year-old Chris Adley passed away at the circuit on November 5.
The WA Sporting Car Club, which runs the track, said the department has advised it was in the club's "best interests" to stop all motorcycle activity at the track indefinitely. The department has no statutory power to enforce that position, but the car club says it is taking the recommendation seriously.
Motorcycling Western Australia, the governing body for motorcycle racing in the west, issued a statement welcoming the report.
Department of Sport and Recreation director general Ron Alexander said the audit report found there were "extreme risks" at the track.
The audit suggested extra barriers and run-offs could be installed at the track, but Mr Alexander was non-committal about its prospects of re-opening to motorcycle activity.
