The 2009 Enduro World Championship descends on Serres, Greece this weekend for the penultimate round, and we couldn’t help but notice that Isle of Man star David Knight is back on the entry list.
The event signifies Knight’s return to world enduro action for the first time since he split with BMW mid-year after what had been a hapless dalliance on the all-new G 450 X.
Since then, “Knighter” has joined forces with Kawasaki under the same umbrella -- Paul Bird Motorsport -- that runs the Japanese’s company’s official world superbike effort with Australian Broc Parkes.
And Knight has quickly reminder everyone that he hasn’t lost his mojo, recently winning the British enduro title on the fuel injected KX450F.
But now comes the real litmus test in Greece, where Knight will line up in the blue-chip E2 class against erstwhile BMW teammate Juha Salminen, reigning world champion Johnny Aubert (KTM), and other guns in the form of Bartosz Oblucki (Husqvarna), Rodrig Thain (TM) and Joakim Ljunggren (Husaberg).
He may or may not win, but Knight will probably take great satisfaction in at least defeating Salminen.
And if he’s really on fire and defeats the hitherto undefeated Aubert, the battle for the world enduro title could still go down to the last round, which will be held in France on September 12-13.
Aubert is currently 75pts inn front of Salminen.
