MotoGP won't be enjoying the fruits of the Donington Park transformation after all (here) with news that the world's premier road racing championship will be heading back to Silverstone in 2010.
Dorna Sports, the commercial and television rights holder of MotoGP, has signed a five-year deal to make Silverstone the new home of the British Motorcycle Grand Prix.
Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta stated: "We are delighted that the MotoGP World Championship is returning to Silverstone as of 2010. The venue has excellent facilities and a circuit with a great heritage, having hosted some superb grand prix racing in the 1970s and 1980s.
"We are sure that MotoGP's visits to the UK will continue to be highly successful when we make the historic move back to Silverstone next year."
Silverstone, in Northamptonshire, hosted grand prix action between 1977 and 1986, with Aussie Wayne Gardner winning in the last year on his NSR500.
One of Silverstone's finest moments was the classic battle between the late Barry Sheene and Kenny Roberts in 1979, won by the latter.
Silverstone was first opened as a WWII airfield, and is named after the English word for wooded area.
