In the face of stiff opposition from both NSW and other countries desperate to host grand prix racing, the Victorian Government has secured the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island until 2016, with options to extend the contract until 2026.
The announcement was made in Melbourne this afternoon by the Victorian Tourism and Major Events Minister Tim Holding and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) Chief Executive Officer Drew Ward.
"Victorians love their sport and securing the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix confirms Melbourne's status as the sporting capital of the world," Mr Holding said.
"We are proud to support major sporting events that place Melbourne and Victoria in the national and international spotlight and boost tourism to our state."
The AGPC also announced today that Iveco (Industrial Vehicles Corporation) has signed a two-year naming rights sponsorship agreement for the 2010 and 2011 events.
This year's Iveco Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix will be held from October 15-17.
The extension of the Phillip Island MotoGP contract follows on from a recent announcement that the Victorian circuit will also continue to host the world superbike title until at least 2014.
