MotoE machines go up in flames

A massive blow for the inaugural electric bike series, with machines and equipment all razed

The MotoE World Cup series for electric bikes is feeling the heat: literally.

Early on March 14, a fire in the newly built E-paddock at the Jerez circuit in Spain destroyed bikes and equipment, to the extent that the opening round planned on the weekend of May 4-5 (back at Jerez) has been cancelled.

No-one suffered any injury, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.

It can be confirmed, however, that no motorcycles were charging at the time of the incident in the box in which the fire started.

A revised 2019 calendar will be released in coming weeks.

“It is a terrible blow but I am sure that all those working for this exciting new venture will find the strength and motivation to overcome this unfortunate occurrence and make the championship a success," said FIM President Jorge Viegas. "We look forward to putting this behind us and are confident in the future.”

Aussie world endurance champion Josh Hook wil compete in the MotoE World Cup for the Alma Pramac Team, and he was seventh fastest in testing at Jerez before the fire brought an unceremonious end to proceedings.
