Moto2 gets first ever female rider

Elena Rosell will be the first female rider in history to contest a Moto2 race, when she lines up at the Dutch GP at the Assen circuit

It's been eight years since a woman last rode competitively in GP racing, as Elena Rosell  takes the place of injured Spaniard Julian Simón at the 2011 Dutch GP race.

Racing in the Moto2 category, Rosell replaces Simón at the Mapfre Aspar Team after he broke his lower leg at the Catalan GP. And you can bet your bottom dollar that Rosell will looking to make an impact as the first female rider to compete in the Moto2 category.

She normally races in the CEV Stock Extreme series as a privateer, where she is currently placed third in her category.

"I still can’t believe the opportunity I have this weekend," said a visibly stoked Elena Rosell.

"The possibility of me joining up with the Mapfre Aspar Team for a race was first discussed last week and it has been a nerve-wracking few days for me. It is an opportunity I have been hoping for ever since I began racing and I have to thank the Mapfre Aspar Team for the faith they have shown in me," added Rosell.

"I am going to make my Moto2 debut with one of the best teams and words can’t describe how that makes me feel.”
