According to Singapore Press website Asia One News, motorcycle and scooter riders in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi are facing a crisis: there are so many bikes and scooters in the city, there's simply not enough room to park them all.
Recent government figures indicate Hanoi is home to 300,000 cars and a staggering 3,800,000 bikes and scooters. Furthermore, with the Vietnamese economy booming the number of personal vehicles is growing by 15 per cent per annum.
At present the city has 1178 licenced parking lots, which are said to meet just 10 per cent of the demand. This in turn has led to car, motorcycle and scooter owners parking wherever they can - including footpaths, shop fronts, any anywhere else not already taken up by buildings, people, or another vehicle.
The squeeze has led to the emergence of countless illegal parking lots on footpaths and in vacant public spaces.
Two-wheeled transport is normally part of the solution to solve traffic congestion problems, but Vietnam's capital will need to develop new strategies to combat the parking problem.
