Moss stars in Oz MX

The 2013 Australian Motocross Championship continued in Broadford last weekend, as Matt Moss claimed a stunning maiden win in the premier MX1 class

Matt Moss (Suzuki) has powered to his first overall victory in the MX1 class as the 2013 Australian Motocross Championship continued at the State Motorcycle Sport Complex in Broadford (Vic) on Sunday, May 19.

Moss went 1-2 in the two 30-minute (plus a lap) motos to bank 73pts, foinihsibng aead of Billy Mackenzie (Yamah, 67), Kirk Gibbs (KTM< 57), Jake Moss (Suzuki, 56) and championship leader Todd Waters (KTM, 55).

“My day started off well and we were able to comfortably qualify first in Super Pole,” Moss reflected. “That really boosted my confidence, the bike was working great and I felt good on the track. I didn’t get a good start in moto one, I crashed myself, but was able to chase down the leader and win.

“We made some changes in between motos that I was confident would work and I’ve never felt so good. It was one of those motos that was effortless. Unfortunately Billy [Mackenzie] was too far ahead to chase down by the time I got into second, but all in all it was good and I really need to thank my team at Motul Pirelli Suzuki.”

Meanwhile, Waters, who had dominated the opening three rounds, competed at Braodford afer a huge crash the weke befor4e loeft him with a brain bleed.

“ A couple of doctors said to sit out for two months, but Race Safe said they’d look into some specific testing,” said Waters. “On Friday I failed on reflexes, and then they tested me on Saturday and I showed 60 per cent which, since I’m a smooth rider and not an out-of-control rider, was a pass.

“I fell in a heap after the first race. That second moto was the toughest race I’ve ever done in my life but I just had to finish. It’s tough, I’m a racer and coming from winning all the time to eighth place hurts but I’m not 100 per cent and I got around best I could to minimise the damage and I owe that to the team and everyone that’s there backing me.”

Waters leads the championship by 27pts – 269 to 242 -- obver Matt Moss, with Mackenzxie (226) in third.

The Australian Motocross Championship will resume on Sunday, June 2, in Conondale (Qld).
