Matt Moss claimed the overall honours in the MX1 class at round one of the 2016 MX Nationals in Horsham, Vic on April 3, completing a dream debut for his new employer, Kawasaki.
Moss scored 3-1 finishes in the two motos to bank 65pts, finishing just ahead of KTM's defending champion Kirk Gibbs (2-2, 64pts) and Yamaha's Dean Ferris (1-6, 60pts).
“Today was a great result, especially considering it was my first outing with the new team, but I knew it was going to be a good thing,” Moss said. "The first race is always a bit jittery, and I rode a little bit tight, little bit nervous and I actually had arm pump almost the entire moto.
"So I knew when those guys in front weren’t pulling away from me while I had arm pump it was going to be a good second moto.
“Getting the win and heading into the second round with the red plate feels great. I’m not usually up there at the start of the championship, so I’m really happy to be in the box seat early on, and this is an amazing way to start the season.”
Moss' teammate and Superpole winner Kade Mosig was fourth overall on 56pts, from Todd Waters (Suzuki), Brett Metcalfe (Husqvarna, 52), Daniel Reardon (50) and Dylan Long (Honda, 48).
Ferris and Waters were making their official returns to the MX Nationals after stints in Europe, while 31-year-old Metcalfe hasn't raced motocross in Australia for well over a decade. Metcalfe is locked in for another three of the remaining nine rounds.
Caleb Ward (KTM) took the MX2 honours from Nathan Crawford (Husqvarna) and Jake Moss (Kawasaki).
Round two of the 2016 MX Nationals will be held in Appin, NSW on April 17.
