Moss extends series lead

The Australian Motocross Championship made its first visit to Swan Hill, with Suzuki's Matt Moss extending his lead to 11pts with just two round remaining

The 2013 Australian Motocross Championship continued at Swan Hill on Sunday, August 11, with the regional venue proving to be a good one for Suzuki hotshot Matt Moss.

Moss claimed victory in the premier MX1 class, extending his championship lead to 11pts over KTM’s Todd Waters with just two rounds remaining. The win marked Moss’ overall victory of the season.

Moss won both 30-minute motos, heading home Waters on both occasions. Waters challenged Moss in the first outing, before being forced to recover from a poor start in the second as he climbed to the runner-up position.

"It's good to battle with (Todd Waters) and I know it's going to go down to the wire,” Moss said.

“I'm really looking forward to that. I really have to thank Motul Pirelli Suzuki, Jay Foreman, Jess and even Cody Cooper's mechanic Nathan. We've worked hard and I'm really happy with the progress we've been making."

Completing the podium was Waters’ teammate Kirk Gibbs, the South Australian finishing third in both motos. Internationals Billy Mackenzie (Yamaha) and Gareth Swanepoel  (Honda) were fourth and fifth respectively.

Serco Yamaha’s Luke Styke continued his march toward the MX2 title with his seventh overall of the season, via a commanding 1-1 result. Now 103pts ahead of Kale Makeham (KTM<), he’s on track to clinch the title with one round to spare.

A pair of KTM two-strokes joined Styke on the podium, with Brock Winston and Makeham second and third respectively. Makeham was on par for the runner-up until he experienced a deflating tyre during moto two.

Another rookie in Dylan Long (KTM) claimed a season-best fourth, while experienced former national champion Ryan Marmont (Suzuki) was fifth.

The Australian Motocross Championship will resume in Toowoomba (Qld) on Sunday, August 25.
