More power, more tech for all-new 2021 Yamaha MT-09

A boost in power and new tech marks the latest generation of Yamaha's middleweight hyper naked

Lighter, more powerful and more technologically advanced is the word from Yamaha on the new 2021 Yamaha MT-09, which was officially unveiled overnight.

The popular middle-weight hyper naked machine has undergone a sizeable overhaul, with a new 889cc CP3 engine leading the list of updates. With an increased capacity (849cc to 889cc), the new MT-09 pumps out more horsepower and torque across the rev range.

Maximum power output is now 87.5kW at 10,000rpm, and max torque has jumped to 93Nm at 7000rpm. Compared to the previous version, the torque is significantly increased and arrives much earlier – a full 1500rpm lower down the rev range.

Yamaha claims that nearly every engine component is new, thanks in part to Euro 5 compliance. Overall, the 2021 power plant is 1700g lighter than the current version.

A new fuel delivery system helps improve torque, power and economy, with the new fuel injectors mounted to the throttle valve side, and fuel injected onto the back of the intake valve heads.

Also upgraded for 2021 is the Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle, which is complimented by the addition of a new Accelerator Position Sensor Grip (APSG). The lightweight ride-by-wire system is similar to the unit featured on the YZF-R1 and R1M.

The 2021 Yamaha MT-09 features bold new styling

Other features of the new MT-09 include new intake and exhaust systems, an optimised transmission and uprated A&S clutch, a lighter and stronger die-cast aluminium Deltabox chassis, and new minimalist bodywork design.

Electronically, the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 features a 6-axis IMU, lean-sensitive rider aids, three traction control modes, a new 3.5-inch full colour TFT display, LED projector lighting and a quick shift system.

Lighter 10-spoked forged wheels, premium KYB suspension and high-spec Nissin braking components round out the new package. Yamaha claims the new MT-09 weighs just 189kg – 4kg less than the previous generation, and allegedly the lightest in its class.

The new 2021 Yamaha MT-09 will be available from February 2021 with three colours – Strom Fluro, Icon Blue and Tech Black. Local pricing is yet to be announced.
