Monster Jam madness is about to hit Australia in October, with the five-tonne trucks to perform In Melbourne (twice), Sydney and Adelaide between October 4 and 18.
This will be Monster Jam’s first true “tour” down under, following on from a successful one-off Sydney appearance in October, 2013 in front of 55,000 spectators.
Among the star performers in Australia – trucks, not drivers -- will include ‘Grave Digger’, ‘El Toro Loco', ‘Max-D’, and ‘Madusa’. The custom-built trucks cost $250,000 each, reach up to four metres tall and four metres wide, and are powered by octane-injected engines producing up to 2000hp. They sit atop enormous hand-carved tyres that take 50 hours to cut and are more than 1.7m high. They can accelerate from 0-100km/h in under three seconds.
The bodies are genuine works of art, with airbrushed logos and creative paint jobs, and a host of appendages like the giant Mohawk atop the cab of Mohawk Warrior, or the midnight black, razor sharp teeth of the ferocious Monster Mutt Rottweiler.
Showtime features two sessions: racing, where trucks compete in head-to-head combat; and freestyle motocross.
Speaking of motocross, one of the Monster Jam drivers is American Damon Bradshaw, who was a former motocross and supercross star in the 1980s and 1990s. He also won multiple Motocross des Nations riding for America. Bradshaw completed his first full season in 2007 in which he later won the coveted Rookie of the Year award. Two years later, Bradshaw won the Monster Jam World Finals Freestyle Championship.
