World speedway racing could be on its way back to Australia, with Melbourne on the provisional calendar for next year's 12-round championship.
The Melbourne round is still listed as a "TBC" (to be confirmed) for November 14, which would be the last round of the championship.
Motorcycling Australia (MA), the national governing body for motorcycle racing, has confirmed that Telstra Dome (Etihad Stadium from next March) is the proposed venue for the likes of world champion Nicki Pedersen and Aussie stars Jason Crump and Leigh Adams to ply their trade on a purpose-built track.
Amazingly, the national controlling body admits it knows very little about the proposed world championship bid in its own back yard, with a private promoter believed to be behind the audacious bid.
Telstra Dome, located in the Docklands precinct on the edge of the Melbourne CBD, has a very similar feel to Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, arguably now the blue-chip world speedway round.
Telstra Dome has superb amenities and a retractable roof, which would be used in the event of inclement weather.
Australia last hosted a world speedway round in 2002 at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney. However, the event suffered financially and didn't return the following year.
