Melbourne to ban motorcycle parking on crowded footpaths

Melbourne City Council has proposed a ban on motorcycle parking to combat overcrowded footpaths in the CBD

A new Melbourne City Council proposal would see motorcycles banned from parking on certain sections of footpath in the Melbourne CBD.

According to The Age, the proposed ban will cover eight CBD locations which have been affected by serious overcrowding during peak times.

But motorcyclists will be compensated, with 36 car parking bays to be converted into 151 free motorcycle parking spaces.

The proposal is in response to a report which found 14 per cent of CBD footpaths to be overflowing with pedestrians during peak times, forcing many to walk on the kerb or the road. The report also found that in 2018 an average of 1179 motorcycles were parked on footpaths in the Hoddle Grid on weekdays, up from 903 in 2007.

Melbourne is currently the only Australian capital city that allows motorcyclists to legally park on footpaths. They can park on the footpath provided they don’t obstruct pedestrians or parked cars.

The proposed ban will be voted on by Council next week, and sources say it will most likely be approved.
