Long-time lobbyist Damien Codognotto has organised a mass protest ride to be held in Melbourne on Saturday, July 5.
The focus of the event will be to protest against road tolls on the new Eastlink road for motorcyclists but there will also be some attention given to the unjust nature of the $56 (and rising) tax each year imposed on behalf of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC).
Front number plates will also get a whacking but recent news is that the Queensland Government has rejected the idea and, if it can't be implemented nationally, it won't be implemented at all.
The ride coincides with the opening of a new freeway link in Melbourne, Eastlink, which is the first toll road in Victoria planning to charge motorcyclists. Eastlink opened on June 29 and is offering one month's free travel before tolls are imposed.
Organisers of the protest believe that motorcyclists should be allowed to ride free as they have no impact on the road structure, reduce traffic congestion and are less likely to be involved in crashes on separated carriageways (bike crashes cost the government and TAC a fortune).
The assembly area will be the Doncaster Park and Ride station (Melway 46 K1).
At noon, riders will proceed to Frankston travelling at 10km/h under the speed limit (90km/h).
The distance is approximately 60km and the destination is the Frankston Civic Centre in Davey Street (Melway 100A C9).
