Melbourne motorcycle expo looming

Victorian motorcyclists are in for a treat when the Australian Motorcycle Expo throws open its doors in Melbourne over November 26 to 28

The Australian Motorcycle Expo returns to Melbourne in 2010, with the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre set to be transformed into one massive showcase of the latest and greatest in biking over November 26 to 28.

By then, it will have been two years since the expo was last in Melbourne, following an annoucement in 2009 that the Sydney and Melbourne expos would now be held on alternate years -- just like the car fraternity.

Melbourne was the first to miss out last year, but is back on in 2010 with a number of new features such as the addition of the Australian Scooter Festival and Australian PWC Show.

This month’s Expo marks 10 years since the first event was opened to the public back in 2001.

Housed in the Royal Exhibition Building, it provided a chance for the motorcycle industry to showcase new models and products to enthusiasts who had never before had a standalone two-wheel expo to attend.

In 2010 the event’s original purpose hasn’t changed, but its size has, with floor space now doubled to accommodate over 120 exhibitors including all of the major bike brands.

Focus has also been placed on entertaining and informing, making the event one the whole family can enjoy.

Event Manager Mark Petersen said the Australian Motorcycle Expo’s success is a testament to the passion of those involved in the industry.

“It was a huge thrill to open the doors to the Royal Exhibition Building back in 2001 but within a few years the show had well and truly outgrown the 7,500sqm floor space,” said Petersen. “This year’s event will cover over 15,000sqm of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, with more bikes on display than at a motor show.

“The quality and variety offered grows with each event, and exhibitors have been proactive in their reaction to tougher economic conditions in past years.”

With representation from all the major motorcycle brands, the Australian Motorcycle Expo will be the place to be to catch all the hot new models, many of which will have only recently had their world premiere at Milan’s EICMA motorcycle show in Italy.

Complementing the new machinery will be a raft of motorcycle apparel, accessories and bike-related services, while a packed schedule of entertainment will keep the entire family smiling.

Other attractions will include freestyle and mini bike displays, the East Coast Custom Australian Custom Bike Championship, and visitors will also get the chance to enter the competition to win a $40,000 custom chopper.

Entry is $18 for adults, while concessions and kids (aged five to 15) are in for $13 – kids under five are free. A family ticket covers two adults and two kids, and costs $46. The Australian Motorcycle Expo will be open from 10am to 8pm on the Friday, 9.00am to 7.00pm on the Saturday, and 9.00am to 5.00pm on the Sunday.
