Melbourne City Council pro-motorcycle plan

The penny has dropped! Powered two-wheelers would be given preferential treatment as part of a plan to reduce congestion

Melbourne City Council is set to codify preferential treatment for motorcycles and scooters as part of plan to reduce traffic and congestion in the CBD, based on studies which show that a small decrease in in private car usage can have a significant impact on travel flow.

In the 2015-2018 Motorcycle Plan, which will be voted on by councillors next week, the council is looking at replacing paid car parking across the municipality with free motorcycle spaces. Depending on size, about 5-6 scooters can fit in one car space.

A report in The Age newspaper said that council would also look at trying to force developers of new apartment and office towers to create more motorcycle parking and supply lockers for protective clothing.
The plan is supported by a number for riders' groups, including the Victorian Motorcycle Council.

The VMC's John Eacott told The Age: "It is good to see motorcycles really recognised as a solution to the transport problem."

We'll keep you posted on results of the council vote.
