The City of Melbourne has released its long-awaited draft transport strategy, and has committed to installing 300 additional on-street motorcycle parking bays to “provide an alternative to parking on the busiest footpaths”.
The document, titled ‘Draft Transport Strategy 2030’, stops short of suggesting that off-street motorcycle parking in the city should be banned, but there’s a clear focus on introducing new measures to prevent obstacles blocking pedestrians in high volume locations.

The City of Melbourne says it will provide the additional on-street motorcycle parking spaces by 2022, and will also “investigate opportunities to increase off-street parking for motorcycles” over a longer timeline.
Approximately 2700 people travel by motorcycle to the municipality for work each day.
Other action items in the draft strategy include trialing 30km/h speed limits in certain parts of the city, introducing 50km of dedicated bicycle zones over 10 years, and repurposing the “equivalent of 20 Bourke Street Malls worth of public road space and parking spaces to create more space for pedestrians, cyclists, greening, trading and other important uses”.
The daily population in the Melbourne CBD is forecast to increase from 911,000 today to 1.4 million by 2036.
