A new entry-level brand is on its way to Australia - Megelli.
The UK-designed, Chinese-manufactured marque will go on sale in July with a 250cc engine in naked and fully faired models.
The Megelli, a product of British company SLD UK Ltd, will be brought into Australia by the Sydney-based Motorsport Importers Pty Ltd, which also has Benelli on its books.
The naked version will retail for $4590 (plus ORC), with the fully faired model $4990. Both will come with a two-year warranty, serviced by a national dealer network set to be announced in coming months.
The bikes will be available in red, and probably black too.
Megelli has picked up its styling hues from a number of different sources, with the first sketches and drawings laid down in July, 2005.
A little more than two years later the first test samples were running before full production began with a 125cc engine.
The 250c version is a recent development, with the engine built by Chinese company, Zongshen. It produces about 18hp.
Paul Nobbs, the marketing manager at Motorsport Importers, is expecting big things from Megelli.
"The Megelli looks sharp, and the engine in them is bulletproof," said Nobbs. "Learners are not about travelling at 200km/h; they want something that is reliable and is keen on price.
"That's what we are offering, and the initial response to the Megelli has been outstanding.
"I'd be disappointed if we didn't sell a couple of hundred by the end of the year."
Megelli is going through ADR compliance at the moment.
