Three historic races for the big, brawny race bikes of yore will be held on the World Superbike (WSBK) undercard at Phillip Island this weekend, with one 1982 Suzuki Katana to be piloted by two greats of road racing – Australian Steve Martin and Northern Irishman Jeremy McWilliams.
The pair will share racing duties, with Martin taking the reins for the opening two races, before graciously allowing McWilliams to ply his trade in the finale, which will be held on Saturday afternoon.
Just last month, however, there wasn't a gentlemen’s agreement in sight when the two squared off as rivals in the 2012 International Island Classic, the largest historic event in the southern Hemisphere.
Martin was on track for outright victory before his bike played up on the start line in the final race, paving the way for a delighted McWilliams to win his second Island Classic in succession.
Both riders are at Phillip Island in a professional capacity – Martin to commentate for the international WSBK feed and McWilliams as team manager for Aussie Jed Metcher’s World Supersport team – but are also taking the opportunity to moonlight in an historic class which continues to gain more and more devotees.
McWilliams has started from pole position in three world championship GP races at Phillip Island, so he certainly knows the fast way around.
