McRae to tackle Oz Safari on two wheels
The international rally ace has parked his car and is set to contest Australia's toughest desert endurance rally – on a KTMAlister McRae, who has contested numerous World Rally Championship events, has signed on with KTM to contest the 2013 Australasian Safari, the Scottish racer swapping his car for a KTM 500 EXC dirt bike.
McRae said he was looking forward to the event, due be held in Western Australia over September 20 to 27, with nervous anticipation.
“After 20 years of professional driving, I’m really excited and slightly nervous to be riding a KTM in this year’s Australasian Safari,” he said.
“Jeff [Leisk] and the team at KTM have provided a KTM 500 EXC, which is now being prepared so I can get some training miles under my belt,” he added.
Jeff Leisk, General Manager of KTM Australia, said he was thrilled to sign McRae for the arduous event.
“The combination of Alister – who has many rally championship wins under his belt – and a bike well suited to the tough terrain of Safari like the KTM 500 EXC will make them a force in the Moto category,” he said.
McRae revealed he has a long history on two wheels. “Many people don’t know this but my first foray into motorsport was at age 12 in motorcycle trials and motocross,” he said. “Bikes have changed a bit since then,” he added.
