Has there ever been a movie star with such a passion for motorcycle and car racing as Steve McQueen?
Not that we can tell, and the many trophies that McQueen won in a period spanning from the late 1950s to the mid-70s will go under the hammer at an auction in California on May 14, as well as the Husqvarna 400 motocross bike he was famously pictured riding shirtless in a 1971 issue of Sports Illustrated.
The 20-plus trophies in the collection will be sold individually and with no reserve and, in addition to these and many other awards, a complete collection of 19 unpublished photographs of McQueen at the Ascot Park races will be offered, as well as race programs, a wooden trunk used by McQueen to haul his personal effects, and even the original Solar Productions patent for the plastic safety seat designed by McQueen, called the “Baja Bucket.”
