McQueen's Husqvarna breaks record

Some serious dough has been paid for the late movie star's 1971 Husqvarna 400 at an auction in California, setting a new benchmark in the process

A Husqvarna 400cc motocross bike ridden by Steve McQueen and featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1971 has produced a reserve shattering $135,000 at auction in California.

This is how the auction house, Bonhams, described the bike:

“McQueen's Husqvarna 400 Cross was the latest in a line of big-bore motocross models that combines fearsome power and superb handling. Up to that point, many off-road riders endured heavier, twin-cylinder street models stripped and lightened as much as possible; even so, they were leaden and cumbersome.

At the auction, many trophies that McQueen won in a period spanning from the late 1950s to the mid-70s also went under the hammer, as well as a complete collection of 19 unpublished photographs of McQueen at the Ascot Park races, race programs, a wooden trunk used by McQueen to haul his personal effects, and even the original Solar Productions patent for the plastic safety seat designed by McQueen, called the “Baja Bucket.”

Another scene stealer at the auction was the pioneer 1925 model BMW R32 flat-twin, which fetched $131,000.
