The 2014 AMCN International Island Classic will give spectators a chance to see a living TT legend in action, with John McGuinness recently announcing he’ll be a part of the British contingent making the trek Down Under to Phillip Island. It will be the Briton’s first appearance on Australian soil.
McGuinness recently claimed his 20th TT victory, triumphing in the Isle of Man’s Senior TT event just a few months ago. McGuinness will be campaigning a Honda-powered Harris F1 bike in the event, which will be held at the Victorian circuit over January 24-26, 2014.
Forty-one-year-old McGuinness is a bricklayer by trade but with 20 TT victories to his credit he now lies second only to the late Joey Dunlop in terms of TT wins. Those 20 victories are backed up by an incredible 41 other TT podium finishes. In winning this year’s Senior TT McGuinness set a blistering new lap record of 131.671mph, proving he’s got no plans for slowing down any time soon.
McGuinness will further bolster a British line-up that includes riders such as Jeremy McWilliams, Gary Johnson, Steve Brogan, Mike Edwards and Mick Godfrey. In all, some 13 Brits will be making the long journey Down Under to fight for the International Trophy at the 2014 AMCN International Island Classic, backed by eight technicians.
According to the UK team captain, Keith Higgs, McGuinness’s inclusion will give Aussies a rare glimpse of a TT hero. “John McGuinness is a superstar,” he said. “If you have always wanted to get to the Isle of Man to see John race you’re in luck, because I’m thrilled to say he’s heading Down Under. Where else, apart from the Isle of Man, would you want to see him race, but Phillip Island? I can’t wait to see him carve up the place,” he added.
“We have an awesome team this year and I think we will give the Aussies a massive run for their money. Jeremy [McWilliams] is eager to win back the individual trophy and Mick Godfrey rode particularly well last year, getting faster in every race.
“All I can say is the Poms are coming, so get ready for an historic showdown!” he said.
The rider line-ups for the Australia, American and New Zealand teams will be announced shortly, but of one thing you can be sure: the 2014 AMCN International Island Classic promises to be a battle for the ages.
