McCoy produces brilliant Super X win

More heavy rain, this time in Wollongong, but it didn't stop Suzuki's Dan McCoy powering to an upset victory, with Matt Moss again the Lites master

A huge thunderstorm played havoc with finals action in round two of the 2011 Monster Energy Super X at WIN Stadium in Wollongong (NSW) on October 29, but it didn’t stop Suzuki’s Dan McCoy producing a stylish victory in the Open class and also seizing the championship lead in the process.

The deluge caused a 45-minute delay in proceedings, and the formats for the Open and Lites final were changed to one 15-lap race in each class.

In the Open class, Kawasaki’s Billy Mackenzie took maximum advantage from the holeshot and led for the first six laps before going down in the slippery conditions.

Once McCoy passed Mackenzie (who would finish in 10th) he was never headed, although he was pushed right to the end by KTM’s Dan Reardon, with hometown Jay Marmont (Yamaha) working his way back through the pack after a disappointing start to finish third.

“To be honest I have never really enjoyed the mud,” said McCoy. But with such a short series this year you simply need to be near or on the podium every week.”

Lawson Bopping (Suzuki) and Todd Waters (Honda) were fourth and fifth.

After two of five rounds, McCoy now leads on 41pts, from Tye Simmonds (KTM, 40), Reardon (34), Mackenzie (34) and Marmont (33).

The Lites final saw Moss lead from start to finish to make it two wins in as many rounds, prevailing ahead of Steven Clarke (Suzuki), Brendan Harrison (KTM), Gavin Faith (Honda) and Luke Styke (Yamaha).

It was a miserable night for two of the leading lights in Josh Cachia (KTM) and Dean Ferris (Kawasaki), with the former crashing out in the heats and Ferris going down on lap one of the final and heading straight back to the pits.

Moss is now on a perfect 50pts, from Harrison (40) and Styke (38).

Round three of the Australasian Supercross Championship will take place at Campbelltown Stadium (NSW) on Saturday, November 5.
