Australian Garry McCoy has been left stunned by his dismissal as Triumph's factory rider in the 2010 Supersport World Championship.
Less than two weeks after he was officially confirmed alongside Briton Chaz Davies in this year's line-up, the Australian's place in the Italian-managed BE1 squad will now be taken by American Jason DiSalvo.
McCoy's management has already released an official statement about the dramatic dumping, which reads in part:
McCoy's take on his dismissal is clearly at odds with the official release from BE1 Triumph, which says that "the Australian had been expected to take his place alongside Davies, but has left the team by mutual consent".
The former 500 GP and world superbike winner was eighth in last year's supersport title, which included two podium finishes. He was expected to be a major championship contender in 2010, but Triumph's fortunes will now be left in the hands of the two rookies, Davies and DiSalvo, while two-time world champion Sebastien Charpentier is making a return to racing in a second BE1 Triumph squad alongside Spaniard David Salom.
With McCoy now out of a job, 2010 will mark the first year since 1999 that at least one Australian hasn't been a permanent fixture in the world supersport title. Three Aussies have won the superport championship: Andrew Pitt (2001/2008), Chris Vermeulen (2003) and Karl Muggeridge (2004).
